BIPA, UKBI, CEFR: which Indonesian language test should I take?
Short answer
There are three main Indonesian proficiency frameworks. BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing) is the system for foreign learners — taught at universities and offered as a course, not a single standardized test. UKBI (Uji Kemahiran Berbahasa Indonesia) is the official national exam from Badan Bahasa, similar to TOEFL but for Indonesian — taken mostly by Indonesians but also recognized for foreigners. CEFR levels (A1-C2) are mapped against BIPA/UKBI scores for international portability. For most foreign learners: BIPA courses + UKBI exam is the standard pathway.
