The ten words you will use in your first two days

The video had room for three. Here are ten — enough to thank someone, ask a price, and ask where something is. Say them out loud once; the stress is marked in capitals.

  • Terima kasihteh-REE-mah KAH-seeThank you
  • Sama-samaSAH-mah SAH-mahYou're welcome
  • Tidak apa-apaTEE-dak AH-pah AH-pahNo problem / don't mention it
  • Berapa?beh-RAH-pahHow much? / How many?
  • Di mana?DEE MAH-nahWhere? (location)
  • Yang mana?YANG MAH-nahWhich one?
  • SayaSAH-yahI (formal)
  • MauMAH-ooTo want
  • BisaBEE-sahCan / able to
  • TidakTEE-dakNot (formal)

One thing the list cannot show: Indonesian almost never uses a bare name. You put Pak, Bu, Mas or Mbak in front of it, and picking the wrong one is what actually sounds rude — which one, and when.

Then what?

These ten get you through a transaction. They do not get you through a landlord, a pharmacy, or an immigration desk. That is what the lessons are for — 180 of them, A1 to C2, with the exercises and the audio.
