Javanese vs Indonesian: which should you learn first?
Short answer
Learn Bahasa Indonesia first. Indonesian is the official national language spoken by 270+ million across the archipelago, while Javanese (Bahasa Jawa) is a regional language with 84 million speakers limited mostly to central and east Java. Indonesian has no politeness registers and a simple Latin alphabet; Javanese has three levels (ngoko, krama madya, krama inggil) and historically used the Hanacaraka script. Javanese is rewarding once you live in Java, but Indonesian opens 17,000 islands first.
