Balinese vs Indonesian: which should you learn for Bali?

Short answer

Learn Bahasa Indonesia first. In Bali, every local speaks Indonesian — it is the language of schools, government, business, and tourism. Balinese (Bahasa Bali) has 3.3 million native speakers and is used at home, in Hindu ceremonies, and in traditional villages — but it is not necessary for travel, work, or daily life. Balinese has three speech registers tied to caste (low/middle/high) and uses the Aksara Bali script. Learning even a few Balinese greetings (Om Swastiastu, Suksma) earns warm smiles, but Indonesian opens every door.
